What is ISO 9001:20008 quality management system?
ISO stands for International Organization for Standardization. ISO 9001 is one of 17500 standards produced by ISO. ISO started in 1945 where a group of delegates met in London and decided to establish this organization. Since 1946 ISO has published numerous standards. The first published ISO 9001 was in 1987. The standard went through several revisions,ISO 9001:1994, ISO 9001:2000 and the latest is ISO 9001:2008. ISO 9001 is a generic standard that can be applied in different industries such as construction, engineering, manufacturing, services etc.
The latest revision of ISO 9001:2008 was officially launched in Nov 2008.. No major changes has been made to the standard but the focus was to clarify certain clauses of the 2000 revision. The main objectives were to giver better transparency to users and to be more compatible with environmental standard, ISO 14001:2000.
ISO 9001 requirements are defined in 5 requirements and each requirements are break further into clauses.
